SMILE: Now in India

Significant research and development efforts along with rapid technological advancements have generated one of the most innovative approaches for eye surgery – SMILE – a painless eye surgery with a 100% blade-free procedure. Small Incision Lenticular Extraction often abbreviated as SMILE, it is a technology for vision correction, with considerable accuracy than any other eye surgery process available in the current landscape for vision correction.

SMILE: Across the globe

India pioneered in SMILE much ahead. One of the major eye care hospitals in India is Centre for Sight and it established itself as a forerunner in the SMILE laser surgery in India by performing its first-ever surgery in 2008. As a matter of fact, it is Asia’s largest LASIK network. This procedure is a type of refractive surgery that uses a Femtosecond Laser. Under this process, instead of cutting a thin flap on the cornea, SMILE cuts and removes a thin corneal lenticule, and then removes it through a tiny incision ranging from 2- 4 mm in a lesser invasive procedure.

SMILE: In India

With SMILE laser eye surgery (a Blade-free Vision Correction procedure), patients can get vision correction and bid adieu to spectacles. SMILE removes the thin corneal lenticule and removes it with a tiny incision that can range from 2 to 4 millimeters in an invasive procedure. This defines a “lenticule” within the cornea, which corresponds to the number that needs to be corrected. The exact dimensions of these two layers of bubbles are determined by the surgeon based on what’s best for the eye and the refractive error to be corrected. Immediately after the lenticule is created, the surgeon separates the two tissue layers and extracts the lenticule from the cornea, through an incision which is only 3-5 mm wide. There are chances that the patients may experience some pain or discomfort for a few hours but can get back to normal activities right after the procedure. The entire computer-controlled method takes about 20-30 seconds for each eye. The procedure is applicable for people between the ages – 18 to 40 years. Before SMILE, a series of tests are held to check the condition of the eye.
